Coffee Review: i deal coffee

I’m a bit of a coffee snob… Ok well not really a snob but I am really stuck in my ways when it comes to coffee. When I find one I like, I tend to stick with it for a while… a very long while.

Such a long while that I’ve been pretty much importing it from Ottawa to Quebec City (when I lived there) and now to Montreal. It’s been a staple coffee at my mom’s house for the past at least 5 years, and I really don’t see myself not drinking it.

Today, I’ll be giving you my impressions, however somewhat biased, of i deal coffee, a small coffee roaster located downtown Ottawa. They’ve been roasting for the past 20 years, the last 10 in Ottawa. Oh, there is also a location in Toronto if ever you’re in need of a fix.

A great thing about i deal coffee is that their coffee is “Natural coffee”, which is coffee that comes from farms that don’t use pesticides! When they can, they try to buy organic beans, but it isn’t always the case. They also roast their beans in small batches, twice a week, in order to offer the very best to their clients.

Available blends: Around the World, Damn Fine Decaf, Dark Organic Blend, Espresso Blend, Light Organic, Prince of Darkness , Princess of Darkness, Red Sea Blend

Purchase options: 0.5 lbs, 1lbs, online shopping available*, all starting at 9.00$.

Ground options: whole beans, Bodum, Filter, Electric Espresso, Stovetop Espresso, Turkish

In our kitchen, we usually always have a bag of the Around the World, which they describe as “rich and full bodied with chocolate and floral high notes”, and a bag of their Damn Fine Decaf, described as “a blend of naturally processed Ethiopian coffees”.

If you are in/near the Byward Market in Ottawa and decide to pop in and grab some beans, you get a free coffee with your purchase!

Our rating for the Around the World and Damn Fine Decaf

The Around the World is i deal’s best seller, and we can understand why! It clearly lives up to its description of full bodied taste with a hint of chocolate and floral notes.

The Damn Fine Decaf, served as a drip/filter or in a latte is smooth and silky, without any noticeable bitterness or after taste.

Preparation: fine ground, double shot of espresso, and 2% lactose free milk foamed

End result: These blends are our go-to’s and benchmarkers when it comes to coffee, so we are pretty biased in their results. However, we’ve been serving it for the past three years to our guests, and we always get a “oh wow this coffee is delicious, where is it from?!”, so we assume that it’s pretty damn good!

So if you’re tired of buying some generic, grocery store blend, we highly recommend you try out i deal coffee!
